Richtofen simply wants to get the control over a new body (Stuh), while Maxis wanted to save to world and bring back is dear Samantha (ok... he got a bit overboard with the Buried End Game and bringing Richtofen back as a zombie and wanted to destroy the world). I still believe that Richtofen is the evil one and Maxis is the good guy, even tho he's kinda lunatic in the End Game (feels dramatic i guess), Maxis FTW
